KUALA LUMPUR: RHB Research Institute is Neutral on YTL Power International’s unit YTL Communications Sdn Bhd (YTL Comms) plan to set up an additional 1,500 base stations in the country.
The move will increase the stations to 4,000 by end-2012 to expand coverage for its 4G mobile Internet-with-voice service, Yes. YTL Comms however did not reveal the investment for the additional base stations
RHB Research said while expanding its coverage from 65% currently to 85% will help YTL Comms compete, “we believe conditions remain challenging for YTL Comms”.
It said mobile broadband net additions for the industry have been tapering off.
“YTL Comms needs to broaden its market into the growing smartphone segment (its Android handset offering has been delayed), or perhaps follow Green Packet’s move into the HSBB retail market,” it said.
