GEORGE TOWN: A record of about 20,000 participants were flagged off Sunday morning from the century-old Birch House at Penang Times Square on Datuk Keramat Road for the Penang Starwalk 2011.
The competition walkers, numbering 4,270, started their race at 6.30am while the non-competition walkers were flagged off at 7.15am by Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.
The walk, 10km-long for competition walkers and 6km for non-competition walkers, will bring them past at least 19 heritage sites including the E&O Hotel, Town Hall, City Hall, Fort Cornwallis, St George's Church, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Sri Mahamariamman Temple and Kapitan Keling Mosque.
The competition walkers, who were flagged off by Star Publications (M) Bhd executive director Tan Sri Kamal Hashim and Penang Starwalk 2011 co-chairman Datuk Syed Mohd Aidid Syed Murtaza, are expected to arrive at the finish line within an hour for those in the top positions.
Non-competition walkers will be stopping at six heritage sites where they will get their heritage passports' stamped in order to redeem gifts after the event.
There is also a 1km charity walk featuring sponsors and representatives of seven charity homes which starts at 7.30am.
Among the higlights of Penang Starwalk 2011 is a variety show featuring music and dance performances as well as a magic show at the Chin Ho Plaza at Penang Times Square. One hundred and fifty lucky draw prizes also await Starwalkers.
Penang Starwalk 2011 is jointly organised by The Star and the Penang Amateur Athletics Association.
The walk, in its 34th edition, features a new heritage route this year in conjunction with The Star's 40th anniversary.
